There is this quirky guy from England, people do not recognise in general. He seems pretty normal, almost boring and he is one of the leading designers of our times. His two offices in London and Paris serve premium clients all over the world. And there is the twist, while design became ominpresent over the last decade and partly lost its inherent exclusivity, he established a new understanding of the term. For Mr. Morrison design has to be normal - super normal and just sufficiant, not stylish. In 2006 he set up an exhibition and published an essay to emphasise his findings: The Super Normal ~~Manifesto~~.

Their latest ~~collection~~ once again proves impressively: The Bauhaus still rocks and so does Eastern Germany.

NYTSM - Teasing With A Capital T

What is the meaning of life? To start off with, I do not know for sure. Just about ten years ago I was convinced the only important thing was to become rich. Rich and a little bit famous maybe, too. My brain was filled with unsatisfied wishes - materialistic ones predominantly and a few that featured full breasts and warm lips.

Today, I still like breasts and the idea of being rich does not freak me out either. What has changed is that I focus much more on actually feeling good and being happy, while I am trying to achieve the long-term goals. In my early twenties I discovered the value of quality and understood how to treat myself. Basically, I started to drink a lot of wine, to eat well and to fancy sewn-welted shoes. Habits and things that allegedly take our minds off the important questions in life. So in addition to being a megalomaniac, I became a consumption-driven narcissist who reads the NYT Style ~~Magazine~~.

One word about the magazine, I find it simply applaudable how this publication unselfishly dedicates itself entirely to all those easy, irrelevant and most beautiful things. A place where the actual essence of life gets neatly subdivided in seven handsome categories. Namely, Women's Fashion, Men's Fashion, Design, Travel, Food, Culture and Video.

And what was the initial question again?

In the 1960s a couple of extraordinary men started to confuse people with art works that focused less on the idea than on sensory perception. Their thing was futzing around with light and architecture to control, sometimes very subtly, how people experience art. Later they became known as the Light And Space Movement. Among them were guys like Robert Irvin, Bruce Naumann and James Turrell. Until the end of February New York-based ~~Gallery~~ David Zwirner shows the reportedly mind-blowing ~~installation~~ SA MI 75 DZ NY of Doug Wheeler, another knight of space and light.

His installation basically reverses the established concept of the white cube. Very ironic, very smart.

At milan design week 2011, Viennese ~~Designer~~ Dejana Kabiljo presented 'fat' and 'let them sit cake', two lovely collections of soft seating.
The pieces draw on the times of princess Marie Antoinette, reflecting the finest Viennese food traditions of ham and delectable pastries.
The furniture pieces obviously stand for abundance, growth, joy, prosperity, optimism and sweetness in our times of uncertainty and economic crisis. Just sweet.

The Beauty Of Child Labour

T-Shirts, footballs, hand bags and diamonds - all over the world little hands are busy creating consumer goods for the upper class, more precisely for us? Perhaps Dutch designer Lucas Maassen felt he should set an example by making his 3 sons, Thijme (9), Julian (7) and Maris (7) work, too. His sons are responsible for the paint job of the furniture, which is built in the family factory. They get paid 1 Euro for every piece of furniture. Due to Dutch child labour laws they are not allowed to work more than 3 hours a week. A bureaucratic annoyance that slows down production speed drastically and limits the number of units. On the other hand a reduction of units luckily increases exclusivity and thereby ups the demand. Maybe Mr. Maassen did not mean to set an example against child labour but simply understood the principle of tightening.

Artek - The 2nd Cycle

It sounds like the title of the next freaking sci-fi-clone blockbuster but it's not. 2nd Cycle is a recycling project of Finish furniture maker Artek. And there's the link, like most clone movies 2nd cycle is dealing with the issues of life and death.
'A few years ago ~~Artek~~ started to collect old Aalto chairs from flea markets, schools, elderly people’s homes and garages. Artek wanted to give these classics a new lease on life, an original opportunity to tell their story. They are called the 2nd Cycle.'
That's kind of sweet, a bit moving even and amazingly profitable of course.

How can one attract attention when nobody wants to listen? You can try and drop your pants but unless you are a ~~university~~ professor in front of your class, it most certainly won't work. We wander through the cities facedown and with plugs in our ears. Sometimes, if I find somebody interesting and take a closer look - people get confused, often even annoyed. Voluntary social interaction in public is unwanted. We spend large parts of our lifes in private, giving away personal information not to potential friends and lovers but mainly to people who use it to sell things to us we do not need. And here comes a ~~guy~~ who figured out a way to make us wonder again.

The term phalanx derives from the greek description of a rectangular and closed moving military formation. Peter Boeckel stuck to this definition while designing his own phalanx - a formation of furniture that merges chairs and a table in an abstract and sculptural way into one formal object. To stow away the chairs, they are pushed into place under the table.

Getty Museum Los Angeles launched a series of videos as part of ~~Pacific Standard Time~~ - a collaboration of cultural institutions across Southern California - in order to celebrate the birth of the L.A. art scene:

Ice Cube drives Inglewood blvd. describing the Los Angeles that he knows. He talks of landmarks like The Forum, Five Torches, Cockatoo Inn, Brolly Hut, and Watts Towers. He refers to the 110 as 'Gangsta Highway'. Cube says coming from South Central L.A. teaches you how to be resourceful.

The video cuts to Cube walking the Eames House perimeter, through the living room, and sitting in the lounge chair. He brings us back to his NWA years when he studied architectural drafting before launching his rap career. One thing he learned that translates is to always have a plan. Cube describes the modern, green and resourceful building design of Charles and Ray Eames - visionaries of connecting nature and structure.

Cube ends by saying 'Who are these people who got a problem with L.A.? Maybe they mad cuz they don't live here.'

The A Table is just one member of the A Range also called the A Team. I am confused, but as the description says, it is ment to be playful and enjoyable. The Replica typeface that inspired the shape of the items was designed by Zurich-based typographers ~~Norm~~.

Brutal reduction combined with an uncompromising choice of material most often lead to aesthetically perfection. The M3, commisioned by Wiener Werkstätte, is as straight as a piece of furniture can be. The chair is made of one and only one material: oak. This is a conscious choice, harkening back to the woodworking tradition upheld by furniture workshops of yore.

With a seating surface floating within the construction and legs extending far to the sides, the M3 is most assuredly not a chair that saves space—it is much rather one which creates a space. The dimensions of the M3 measure one cubic meter, standing for a conscious way of appropriating one’s own space.

Pure beauty through crystal clear shapes - the FX10 Lounge Chair by Thomas Feichtner. The chair is composed of several surfaces each of which is upholstered and covered with leather separately. The surfaces are put together to form a whole, like the ice blocks of an igloo.

Since no seams and no time-consuming sewing are necessary, the Lounge Chair is produced quickly and, moreover, easy to repair simply by exchange of a surface.The abstract name FX10 is actually the product name of a ski binding Thomas Feichtner designed for the Austrian ski maker Fischer previously.

Recently they have transformed the colossal space of the Raphael Gallery at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum with ~~Textile Field~~, a polychromatic patchwork of cushions inspired by the Renaissance cartoons on the walls around. Made in conjunction with Danish fabric house ~~Kvadrat~~ as part of the London Design Festival, the massive 240-square-meter structure was pieced together panel by panel. Mrs. Bones, you have been to Switzerland quite often recently. How comes?
I just love it here. I actually split my time between Switzerland and London. But now we are on tour. Cee Lo Green asked me to join him on his journey through Europe - and I said yes. We are even on the same bus together, it is a dream. And between the shows I am finishing up my new album. Right now, many things are happening at the same time. Whew!

Im ewz-Unterwerk Selnau sind seit heute die Finalisten des fünften Kunstpreis der Nationale Suisse zu sehen. Nominiert wurde ein volles Dutzend DiplomandInnen von acht Schweizer Fachhochschulen. Der Belgische Maler Josse Bailly hat die Konkurrenz gewonnen und nimmt stolze 15'000 Franken Preisgeld mit nach hause.
Kuratiert wurde die Ausstellung von Charlotte Matter, Vorstand

Magath muss gehen

Schalke 04 trennt sich nach eigenen Angaben voraussichtlich zum Ende der laufenden Saison von Trainer Felix Magath. Der Versuch mit einer zentralen Machtfigur endlich Ruhe und Konstanz in die Führung des Clubs zu bringen, ist an der eigenen, überzogenen Erwartungshaltung gescheitert.

Sportlich ist Magath voll im Soll. Der Kader ist international konkurrenzfähig. Er konnte bewährte Spieler wie Raul und Huntelaar in den wenig attraktiven Pott locken, integrierte aber auch erfolgreich junge Spieler wie Matip, Moritz und Draxler. Der Gewinn des DFB Pokals ist möglich, ebenso ein Weiterkommen in der Championsleague. Trotzdem muss er gehen. Man mag ihn einfach nicht auf Schalke. Vermutlich will man einen jungen Wilden, einen wie Klopp oder Tuchel - einen echten Wohlfühl-Trainer eben. Kandidaten sucht man bisher vergeblich.

Das Problem: Felix Magath wird die Trennung verkraften, Schalke 04 hingegen nicht. Denn die erneut gezeigte Sprunghaftigkeit der Vereinsführung wird potentielle Nachfolger abschrecken.
